National Research Act. (as a result of the holocaust atrocities.

Have to do with both the behavioural and medical field.
Identified three basic ethical principles to be followed in order to do research.
1. make sure you respect the participants (this means they have a choice as to whether or not they participate AND you protect those who can not make their own decisions).
2. Beneficence (do no harm)
3. Justice

As a researcher, you have several responsibilities.

1. Research must be well designed so that it is valid, non biased, and people can depend on it (not misleading)
2. Make sure the participants are created ethically (you must go through a peer review).
3. If you do research involving medicine, the research must be supervised by a medical doctor.
4. If you are investigating the results of a treatment, the control group must have a beneficial intervention as well. They can’t just be left to rot. If your experimental group improved more, then the control group must be given the same treatment as well.
5. Debriefing the participants is mandatory.
6. Deal with their distress if there is any.
7. If a study is minimal risk, and it is merely an observational study of a public activity, and no one’s identity is made known, permission is not required.
8. Don’t use deception if at all possible. If you do, it must be peer reviewed and distress must be dealt with afterwards.
9. Keep data confidential (assign random numbers, etc.)
10. If you use case studies, you must get permission from the participants to publish them, even if you are using a pseudonym.
11. Do not report findings in any kind of biased or misleading way. Don’t fabricate or falsify data (why? – hehehehe), don’t plagiarize or take credit for work that is not your own.

Informed Consent:

• If you are going to do a project in a school, or another setting, it is important to get written documentation which says that the project is okay. This way, if the results are negative, your butt is covered.
• Informed consent must be obtained from any participants, or parents if the participants are children (this should be written).
• You can’t use coercion, but you can use rewards. 
• No penalties for not participating.
• In Minimal Risk studies, you do not need informed consent (such as record reviews).

Supervision Requirements which should be present for interns:

• Must have state credential, should have national credential.
• Must have three years experience as a practicing sch psych
• Must provide a min. of two hours of supervision per week (on average).

As an intern, you will create an IEP. You will have to list your goals and objectives for this with your supervisor. Must be a written contract between the university and the field psych.

Dos and Don’ts for internship
• Supervisors will be required to review and sign off on all reports as an intern.
• Should provide opportunities to provide competencies where you feel the need.
• Should provide feedback.
• Clients must give consent to work with an intern.
• Confidentiality rules apply – the supervisor says yes or no on those decisions.
• Supervisors will not provide supervision in areas where they are not competent.
• Supervisors are often held liable for the supervisee’s actions.
